In association with the UCL Volunteering Services Unit (VSU) and Widening Participation (WP), we run a school volunteering programme, ‘Your Health, Your Evidence’ (YHYE), which places UCL volunteers in schools to engage with groups of A-level students about clinical evidence and how it affects their healthcare decisions.
In 2017, EBM+ recruited 6 partner schools, 16 volunteers and approximately 60 school students. In 2018, we expect to recruit 20 partner schools, 50 volunteers and approximately 200 school students. Volunteers engage with their school students about various topics relating to medical evidence, drug development, disease pathology, EBM, evidence-based practice and health policy.
With help and training from core EBM+ project team members, our volunteers plan, organise and carry out a series of weekly workshops in schools throughout the spring term. The last of these workshops will prepare the school students for a presentation which they will give in front of a class or year group of their younger peers, and following this, at the ‘Your Health, Your Evidence’ conference. Information about last year’s conference can be found here: http://www.ebmplus.org/your-health-your-evidence-2017/
